Fossil Grades and Categories

Every fossil that we prepare is unique and one of a kind. Far more characteristics come into play on an item-to-item basis than just what type of animal is contained within the rock. Aspects such as bone placement, the degree of dis-articulation (how intact the specimen is), any decomposition before fossilization, the quality of the fossilization process, the hardness (or softness) of the rock, and others, will all come into play and affect the overall quality and appearance of a finished fossil. Though we strive to prepare each fossil to the best of our ability, we encounter variances in all the above aspects and these play a part in the final product. Because of these, we have separated our fossils into 4 different categories.

These are:

  1. Premium Grade - Virtually perfect fossils, suitable for framing.
  2. Standard Grade - Your typical fossil, fine for display, small imperfections
  3. Basic Grade - Some disarticulation or other imperfections in the fossil, sometimes major
  4. Nugget Fossil - Small fossil, good for those on a budget or who just want an example. Excellent gifts!

Each of the fossils available in our Etsy shop has its category listed.

Below is further explanation of each of the categories.

Premium Grade

Standard Grade

Standard grade specimens are your typical fossil. The Priscacara at left is in pretty good condition, but there is some fragmentation of the fins and a bone has come lose from its jaw.

Basic Grade

Because humans don't have x-ray vision, we don't know the exact state of the fossil inside the rock. We hope for the best, but reality can sometimes show us otherwise. Basic grade fossils have more severe disarticulation, fin fragmentation, or other problems with the fossil characteristics. These are therefore sold more cheaply and serve as just an example of a certain fossil type or species.

Nugget Fish/fossils

Nugget fish (or fossils) are termed this because they are often small in size and easy to obtain. Some are in very good condition, and can also serve as examples of immature or younger animals. These fossils can be anywhere from 1" to 5" in actual "animal" size.

PGW produces quality fossil specimens, sometimes with over 100 hours of preparation time invested. See our Etsy store to see what we have available.
